Big Innings Send Sandburg Softball to Sweep of Kishwaukee

A five-run rally in each game carried the Carl Sandburg College softball team to a sweep of Kishwaukee in an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers (10-22, 6-4) won the opener 10-4 and took Game 2 8-4.

Key Moment
Tied at 3 in the fourth, the Chargers scored five two-out runs to take a lasting lead. Haley Stevenson (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) plated Lizzie Malcolm (Milan, Ill./Alleman) with an infield hit for the go-ahead run, and Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) followed with an RBI single. Two runs scored when the Kougars shortstop booted a grounder off the bat of Whitney Wynkoop (Fulton, Ill./Fulton), and Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) drew a bases-loaded walk.

Wynkoop finished 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Key Moment
Sandburg did all of its scoring in the first three innings, highlighted by a five-run third that saw 10 Chargers come to the plate. Sandburg collected four hits, drew a pair of walks and had a hit batsman.

Benge had a team-leading three hits (including a pair of doubles), scored twice and struck out five without issuing a walk in a complete-game victory.
